چکیده

Desktop computers capable of rendering high-fidelity, three-dimensional graphics have long been used for the development of virtual worlds. Typical interaction with virtual worlds occurs in fully immersive virtual reality systems that make use of complex spatial inputs, but such inputs are not easily replicated with a keyboard and mouse. We present the concept of avatar manipulation as a metaphor for interacting with virtual worlds on desktop computing hardware, and we explain the benefits of this metaphor over techniques that require knowledge of keyboard and mouse commands for interaction. Based on our ideas, we explain an example implementation of the concept that we have written called PySim, a plug-in to VR Juggler. We then review our implementation and propose improvements for future versions.

Inertial Sensor-Based Touch and Shake Metaphor for Expressive Control of 3D Virtual Avatars

In this paper, we present an inertial sensor-based touch and shake metaphor for expressive control of a 3D virtual avatar in a virtual environment. An intuitive six degrees-of-freedom wireless inertial motion sensor is used as a gesture and motion control input device with a sensor fusion algorithm. The algorithm enables user hand motions to be tracked in 3D space via magnetic, angular rate, an...

Bounding Volume Hierarchy for Avatar Collision Detection: Design Considerations

One of the most important aspects in interactive virtual environment applications is maintaining interactive frame rates while providing realistic and believable experience. Due to this fact, collision detection for interactive virtual environment applications acts as an important part of the system. However, due to its computationally intensive nature, collision detection can become a bottlene...

The Studierstube Augmented Reality Project

Our starting point for developing the Studierstube system was the belief that augmented reality, the less obtrusive cousin of virtual reality, has a better chance of becoming a viable user interface for applications requiring manipulation of complex three-dimensional information as a daily routine. In essence, we are searching for a 3-D user interface metaphor as powerful as the desktop metapho...

VR and Laser-Based Interaction in Virtual Environments Using a Dual-Purpose Interaction Metaphor

In this paper we present a dual-purpose interaction metaphor for desktop-based and virtual reality (VR) interaction in VR system environments. Many VR interaction techniques enable users to perform 6 degrees of freedom (DOF) manipulation tasks. However, designers of most GUIs have only standard desktop devices in mind for using them. Therefore porting desktop applications to VR systems often fa...
